Thoughts on paying forward
Paying it forward is such a simple thing that anyone can do. With just a smile on your face and a small interaction, you can make someone’s day. You can help someone with a task, either with a compliment or a physical deed like helping them carry something heavy or even giving a homeless person food. These are all ways you can help someone and encourage them to continue paying it forward. Slowly but surely, paying it forward can make a huge difference in society and towards the world.
In this last chapter assignment, my professor, Sherri Sinkoff, assigned our groups with various themes which really help you become a better person and create better habits for yourself. Group 1 was given the theme of self-care. Group 2 was given the theme of eating healthy and Group 3 was given the theme of paying it forward, which belonged to my group. Diving into these topics really make you start questioning yourself, whether or not you carry these healthy habits or not. Also, even though you may not have the best of eating or self-care habits, doing these presentations may definitely inspire you to try new things. At least for me and I'm sure most of my peers, it definitely encouraged me and offered some tips for me to better my bad habits, which are eating unhealthy and not exercising or treating my body properly by not receiving enough sleep.
Peers presenting
When our professor gave us the assignments, we were also told that we had to create a study guide along with a themed presentation. The study guide is like a mini agenda of the main topics that were to be discussed from the chapter book. For Group 1, their study guide chapters were of Communication perspective, perception of self and others, listening and interpersonal relationships. In which important communication ethics, self-esteem, challenges of listening, and having interpersonal communication were ideas that were discussed. For their theme presentation, however, they presented about Self-care. Group 1 was the last group to present about tips and ways to actually help you.
Self-care is not actually just about treating yourself after a bad day at work to just make you feel better for a short period, instead it should help create long term healthy habits for you. To create these habits you need to figure out the things you enjoy and slowly piece them together to improve yourself, your well-being and even your health. I personally enjoy this topic of self-care because im a true believer of always finding what’s best for you and seeing the impact it creates to your life. It can be as small as taking yourself out to nice place for lunch, or buying yourself a cute accessory or clothing on a random day. These small moments that make you happy do increase your seratonin levels and do slowly encourage you to keep treating yourself right. I feel that a lot of people suffer from people-pleasing and have a difficult time separating some selfishness for themselves. I myself sometimes catch myself doing more for others than for myself, but reflecting upon that is the difference that is slowly being made and slowly I'll add new hobbies or self-care things into my life. Self-care also means treating yourself, your body, your health correctly. That means doing your yearly checkups for yourself is what also keeps you healthy and encourage you to continue making wise healthy choices for your body, physically and mentally.
Group 2 was the second group to present and their study guide chapters had to do with nonverbal messages, delivery, informative speaking, and persuasive speaking. Their theme presentation had to do with eating healthy. Eating healthy is a super important topic that many may rush through but may know that it is important to staying healthy. Nowadays there are a lot of fast-food restaurants that are constantly creating generic foods that aren’t even organic and healthy to even be digesting. During the presentation, my peers included information that I thought was very important and eye-opening towards everyone. This included information about the different diets around the world and the even graphs and charts about obesity in the diets carried in the United States compared to other countries. Also, the interview questions included in the presentation was a good way to receive intel from others and how they think about what a healthy diet might be to them and whether or not it brings you happiness. I can agree that with a healthy diet, happiness will be their as you will gain more energy to do things and use it for hobbies that you enjoy practicing. Overall, remaining aware of the different diets around the world and how it can affect you in a negative way towards your health is something that many should be aware of as even I can catch myself at times eating junk food and seeing the negative signs my body reacts with like feeling tired quickly, drowsy, and unenergized to do activities.
Finally, group 3 who were the first group to present. I am in group 3 and my theme presentation was paying it forward. It was based off a movie but also on how paying it forward can really make a difference in someone’s life. I really enjoyed watching the movie and I do think I resonated with it, since I enjoy helping people and seeing them happy. When it was time to present, I enjoyed how my group members really gave examples of how you can easily pay it forward, which can be by buying a homeless person food, or even complimenting someone and seeing them smile. Sometimes is the small things that truly matter and what will truly make someone’s day. Some things I like to personally do is to compliment people and just share peace and love because I truly think that’s all that really matters and something that society may need to share some of. Overall, I think everyone in my group presented fairly well and explained their ideas thoroughly, although our communication skills could have been better when creating the presentation, we worked through it as a team and was still able to pull through with a concise subject and elaboration from everyone.
